SUMMARY:CLARIAH Digital Heritage and Humanities Summer School
DESCRIPTION:ECTS: 3 ECTS (for RMA and PhD students participating in the sum
mer school)\n\nFrom July 6 to 9\, 2026\, CLARIAH will once again host its
annual summer school in Digital Heritage and Humanities at the Internation
al Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. The purpose of the summer sch
ool is to familiarise participants - from advanced MA students to experien
ced researchers - with digital heritage and humanities approaches that are
broadly applicable in various fields: history\, heritage studies\, oral h
istory\, media studies\, and the social sciences.\n\nMaking use of the num
erous historical datasets\, cultural heritage collections and archives tha
t have been made available via the Dutch Arts &amp\; Humanities infrastruc
ture CLARIAH\, summer school participants gain experience with different t
ools and approaches (both qualitative and quantitative)\, and learn how to
address broader societal questions and research questions of their own us
ing these resources. Available datasets and collections include broadcast
and film collections\, oral history collections\, newspapers and cultural
heritage datasets. You can find an overview of available resources in ineo
and one for audiovisual collections in the Media Suite.\n\nThrough plenar
y lectures and discussions\, participants become familiar with shared inte
rdisciplinary concerns in Digital Heritage and Humanities research. In con
junction with this\, participants deepen their knowledge of how to use dig
ital collections\, datasets and tools in their research by participating i
n one of three thematic strands of their choice under guidance by experts.
Participants can choose from one of the three following thematic strands
(places are limited and will be distributed on a first come first served b
asis):\n\n (Cultural Heritage) Research Data and Ethical\, Legal and Soci
al Issues (ELSI)\n Audiovisual Collections and Media Analysis\n Applicat
ions of Linked Data in Heritage and Humanities\n\nAt the end of the summer
school\, you will know how to work with large datasets\, collections and
digital tools in your research and reflect critically on the ways in which
they may change or challenge your own practice. For more details on the s
ummer school’s individual strands please see the descriptions below\, an
d stay tuned for more additions to the program!\n\nConfirmed Speakers:\n\n
Adelheid Heftberger (Bundesarchiv)\n Vicky Garnett (DARIAH)\n Jetze To
uber (DANS) and Marjan Grootveld (DANS)\n\nThematic Strands CLARIAH Digita
l Humanities and Heritage Summer School\n\n (Cultural Heritage) Research
Data and Ethical\, Legal and Social Issues (ELSI)\nStrand Leaders: Dr. Sab
rina Sauer (RUG). Guest instructors: Maria Eskevich (Huygens)\, Vicky Garn
ett (DARIAH-EU)\, Chiara Latronico (NISV)\n\n\n \n\n Abstract: This stra
nd introduces you to key practical and conceptual aspects of working with
research data focusing on Ethical\, Legal\, and Social Issues (ELSI). In r
ecent years the ability to collect\, process\, and share research data res
ponsibly with among other affected communities\, data privacy or sustainab
ility in mind\, has become key for students and researchers at all levels\
, whether in the context of individual or collective research projects or
applications. In this strand\, you will learn to develop strategies for yo
ur (cultural heritage) research data\, attending to key concepts of ELSI\,
while also being introduced to principles of approaches such as FAIR (Fin
dable\, Accessible\, Interoperable\, Reusable) and CARE (Collective Benefi
 t\, Authority to Control\, Responsibility\, Ethics).\n Topics\, tools and
skills that will be covered in this strand include:\n\n Risk assessment
for (cultural heritage) research data based on ELSI concepts\n Developmen
t of data management plans for research projects/applications\n Approache
s to depositing and sharing your data in relevant repositories \n\n\n\n\n
 \n&nbsp\;\n\n Audiovisual Collections and Media Analysis\nStrand Leader(s
): Mary-Joy van der Deure (UvA) and Dr. Christian Olesen (UvA). Confirmed
guest instructors: Adelheid Heftberger (Bundesarchiv)\, Andrea Meuzelaar (
UvA)\, Norah Karrouche (VU).\n\n\n \n\n Abstract: In recent decades\, au
diovisual collections have become increasingly significant resources for a
broad variety of fields involving historical\, archive-based research and
media analysis. Yet\, because of their time-based\, multimodal\, and ofte
n materially heterogeneous nature\, audiovisual collections can be challen
ging to navigate\, analyze\, and incorporate into research projects. Worki
ng with the audiovisual collections and tools made available in the Media
Suite research environment\, in this strand you learn how to devise search
strategies to find your way through different types of metadata descripti
ons and data enrichments\, to link and analyze audiovisual resources and t
o work with digital tools for close content analysis. The Media Suite prov
ides access to many audiovisual collections from among others the NISV\, E
ye Filmmuseum\, DANS Oral History Collections\, IISG and the House of Repr
esentatives of The Netherlands\, and facilitates different types of analys
is: from distant reading and viewing to close analysis. During the summer
school\, you will create\, enrich and annotate your own corpus following y
our own research interest.\n Topics\, tools and skills that will be cover
ed in this strand include:\n\n Video annotation and Qualitative Data Anal
ysis (QDA)\n Searching and filtering different types of archival metadata
\n Corpus building: saving and connecting items from different collection
s in your own online user space\n Basic approaches to visualizing pattern
s in metadata\n\n\n\n\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n Applications of Linked Data in Herit
age and Humanities\nStrand Leader(s): Dr. Richard Zijdeman (IISG/VU/Univer
sity of Stirling)\n\n\n \n\n Abstract: As cultural heritage institutions
increasingly turn to linked data approaches for reimagining access and co
nnecting digitised collections\, knowing how to work with linked data beco
mes a critical skill. This strand introduces participants to working with
linked data based on the demographic\, social\, and economic history datas
ets made available by heritage and research institutes. The datasets cover
diverse topics such as the civil registers\, commodities\, environment an
d labor\, social and economic inequality\, and individual and collective a
ction. Following the guiding principles of the Network of Digital Heritage
(NDE)\, we will guide you through the basic concepts of Linked Open Data.
No prior knowledge of Linked Data is required.\n Topics\, tools and skil
ls that will be covered in this strand include\n\n Why Linked Data?\n Li
nked Data on the Web and how to use (‘query’) it\n Creating Linked Da
ta yourself with basic tooling\n Creating Linked Data with Python\n Reus
ing vocabularies and data models\n Publishing Linked Data\n\n\n\n\n\nRegi
stration\nYou can register for the CLARIAH Summer School by filling in the
registration form via this link.\nThe event is free of charge. For any ad
ditional inquiries about the event\, feel free to get in touch with Dr. Ch
ristian Olesen (c.g.olesen@uva.nl) and Mary-Joy van der Deure (m.vanderdeu
 re@uva.nl).
