I obtained a PhD in Social Sciences (University of Antwerp, 2008) with a dissertation on Post-Soviet Russian Film Policy, for which I conducted research at the Russian Institute for Cinema Research in Moscow. One of the main results of this research was a framework for national cinema analysis, published here.

In 2009, I started working as a postdoctoral researcher on media and migration, and conducted a visual methods study on photography, as part of the media and diaspora research line of Utrecht University. The methodological framework for photograph analysis is published here.

From 2010 onwards, I work within the field of Audiovisual Data in Digital Humanities, with a focus on the collections of Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision and EYE. I was postdoc in BRIDGE (NWO-CATCH), TROVe (CLARIAH-SEED), AVResearcherXL (CLARIN/CLARIAH-SEED) and EYE's Mapping Desmet a tool for mapping historical film distribution and programming (NWO-KIEM). In 2014, I also worked within the CREATE-project at the media studies department of UvA. Since 2015, I am part of the Core Team WP5 Audiovisual Data and Media Studies of the national infrastructural project CLARIAH (NWO), aimed at developing the national research infrastructure for audiovisual data Media Suite, and as from January 2019 I am its Operational Workpackage Leader.

In addition, I was visiting scholar at the Comparative Media Studies program at MIT and member of the first cohort of fellows of MIT's digital humanities lab MIT HyperStudio. In 2017-2019 I was co-chair of the SCMS SIG "Digital Humanities and Videographic Criticism" that links the international community of film and television scholars working within the dynamic field of video essays and digital humanities. Currently, I am co-editing with Lauren Tilton, Taylor Arnold and Stef Scagliola a special issue on Audiovisual Data in Digital Humanities Quarterly, planned to be published in Winter 2020.

In the area of teaching, my research interests involve pedagogy for Digital Humanities. Central to this is the development of a model for Digital Tool Criticism in a joint venture with Marijn Koolen (KNAW Humanities Cluster) and Jacco van Ossenbruggen (VU Amsterdam), published here. I am developing new courses in the area of audiovisual data and interactive storytelling, such as Television History online (since 2014) and Workshop Audiovisual Media (from 2018 onwards). Currently, I am working with Christian Olesen (UU/UvA) on the educational platform CLARIAH Media Suite Learn, and with Willemien Sanders and Mari Wigham (NISV) on the CLARIAH Media Suite Data Stories.

As part of practice-as-research, I have done internships for Expeditie Robinson, the reality series Zo zijn we niet getrouwd, the game show Losgeld and volunteered at Black Nights Film Festival in Tallinn. During my Phd and postdoctoral research, I co-produced two short films: TAM film's Trulichka (shot in Latvia) and FLYEYE's Passage (shot in Ukraine). Currently, I am working on a small analogue photography project, see here.
